What is Coenzyme Q10, and how does it work?

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like compound that can be found in almost every cell in the body.
Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like compound that can be found in almost every cell in the body. It's been shown to support cellular energy, making it a powerful antioxidant.
Coenzyme Q10 is necessary for cells to produce energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an organic chemical and a nucleoside triphosphate. ATP can also be thought of as an energy currency for the cell because it is used to power thousands of cellular processes necessary for survival. The production of ATP requires coenzyme Q10.
Coenzyme Q10, also called ubiquinone or CoQ10, plays a central role in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. In this process, electrons extracted from food molecules during metabolism are passed to oxygen and hydrogen ions to form water. The movement of these electrons drives an enzyme called ATP synthase—which, in turn, produces ATP from adenosine diphosphate (ADP).
That's all very interesting, but what does that have to do with skincare?
Research suggests that topical application of Coenzyme Q10 may reduce the signs of ageing, protect against sun damage, and improve skin moisture.
Coenzyme Q10 can help to fight the signs of ageing in multiple ways, but one of its most promising uses is in topical applications.
It's a known fact that UV rays from the sun damage skin. When you're exposed to sunlight, it releases free radicals that cause an inflammatory response which contributes to wrinkles and lines. Research suggests that topical application of Coenzyme Q10 may reduce the signs of ageing and improve skin moisture.
In one study, researchers found that a cream containing CoQ10 decreased facial wrinkles by as much as 30% compared with no treatment after 12 weeks of use. Another study found similar results in people who used a 2% CoQ10 cream for six months every day. It improved their fine lines, roughness and elasticity more than regular face cream.
Coenzyme Q10 skincare products are an excellent pick for any skin type.
Coenzyme Q10 is a moisturising, nourishing ingredient that can be used topically by people of all skin types and ages. It is perfect for those concerned about ageing skin, as it is an antioxidant with free radical-fighting properties. Coenzyme Q10 can also be combined with other anti-aging products like retinol.
Theseeke Rejuvenate Moisturiser contains coenzyme Q10. By applying Theseeke Rejuvenate Moisturiser daily (we like to use this one morning and night), you should be able to experience firmer skin and smoother after just a few weeks of use!
We also need to point out that Coenzyme Q10 is in no way a replacement for Sun protection. You can find our sun protection options here. We recommend sunscreen be applied daily as a normal part of your skincare ritual.
